Dr. Roberta
Louis Goodman Named Director Of Education
After a nationwide search, N.S.C.I. president
Judy Wexler has announced that the nationally
known Jewish Educator,
Dr. Roberta Louis Goodman, will begin her work
as Director of Education of the North Shore
Congregation Israel Goodman Center for Jewish
Education on August 1, 2010.
With over 25 years of experience in Jewish
education, Dr. Goodman comes to North Shore
Congregation Israel from JECEI (Jewish Early
Childhood Education Initiative), a national
initiative focused on fostering excellence in
Jewish early childhood schools. She spent over
ten years as a congregational educator and has
worked in a wide range of Jewish educational
settings either as a staff member or consultant.
She has experience teaching educators as a
faculty member at Cleveland’s Siegal College of
Judaic Studies and through workshops and courses
she has taught throughout the country. She has
written and published curricular materials for
students and teachers as well as articles in the
areas of faith development and spirituality,
research and evaluation, adult education, Jewish
educational personnel, grant writing, and early
childhood education.
Dr. Goodman, RJE has spent more than half of her
life living in Glencoe where she grew up and
later returned 12 years ago. She is a product of
NSCI’s religious school, its youth group and
OSRUI. She worked for NSCI as a college
undergraduate while at Northwestern where she
played varsity tennis. From there she went off
to the Rhea Hirsch School of Education at Hebrew
Union College (HUC-JIR) earning a Masters in
Jewish
Education. Later, she obtained a doctorate in
adult education from Teachers College/Columbia
University.
She is a past president of NATE (National
Association of Temple Educators), past
chairperson of Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) Alumni Council,
and served on the boards of the Union for Reform
Judaism and the Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion.
She lives in Glencoe with her husband, Dr.
Robert Goodman, children Shoshana (14) and Evan
(11), and their two dogs, Connor and Natalie a
mile from her parents, NSCI congregants Maynard
and Judy Louis.
