Machonik (Teacher Assistant) Program

We are looking for Machoniks to help in our after-school programs as well as our Sunday programs. We welcome our 9th graders to be Machoniks from 11:00 AM -1:00 PM and our 10th graders to be Machoniks from 8:45-10:45 AM on Sundays. Juniors and Seniors are eligible to work either or both Sunday sessions. Machoniks are paid each month. The Machonik program involves a commitment to come regularly, as well as a commitment to work with the teacher on planning and implementing learning experience. Your teacher will expect to be able to reach you by phone sometime during the week to plan.

Dena Gilman, former Machonik and TYG President, and current Chaverim teacher, has been appointed effective January 1 as the Machonik Mentor to help the Machoniks become even more effective role models. The Machoniks are one of the greatest parts of our school. We want being a Machonik to continue to be a very desirable role for our high school students.

Dena will use the approach of working with the Machoniks  in different ways. She will work with the Machoniks for 1) short coaching sessions about teaching and learning, 15 – 20 minutes rotating by grade level/family education every 3 – 6 weeks and 2) providing feedback by observing in the classrooms, and 3) helping any Machonik who brings a question or concern (e.g. how to handle a difficult student, techniques for reading stories or leading a discussion) about doing their job effectively. Dena is available to teachers too who would like help with guiding and supporting their Machoniks and incorporating them as much as possible into the classroom.

Dena is available on Sundays the entire second session. She can be available sometimes during the first session or at the changeover between early and late sessions.

If you are interested in working as a Machonik, please call the school office.
